ROLAN’S STORY

2010–2014: A NEW AGE OF CAR SERVICES

Image

Rolan was born out of the desire to ease the obligations that come with owning a car. The business idea was born as a solution to an obvious need: inspecting and maintaining cars is laborious and time-consuming.
The idea of a service that saves car owners time and effort by offering car services at our customers’ homes or workplaces became a reality in the summer of 2010, when the business of Rolan Oy – Car services at your doorstep was launched.

At the same time, at the beginning of the 2010s, car sharing was taking its first steps in Finland. Rolan was involved in developing it, and in 2012 launched its first shared transport service, maintenance and transfer services for shared cars. The service brought security to the company's business as well as the first idea of what Rolan could be like in the future. Extending Rolan’s services to shared cars allowed the company to grow: in 2014, the company hired its first employees in addition to the business owner.

2014–2017: MAINTAINING A SHARED SOCIETY

The years 2014–2017 were a period of slow but steady growth for Rolan. Shared use was a rising trend that Rolan also believed in. A strategic decision was made by the company's Board of Directors, which focused the business on the 3Y strategy, i.e. maintaining a shared society. Rolan had recognized the challenges involving the maintenance of shared equipment.

2017–2020: THE TRANSITION OF MOBILITY BEGINS

At the end of 2017, the company's focus on shared traffic services was further strengthened when Rolan became involved in a city bike project with the City of Turku.
This made us believe that the strategic direction chosen was the right one.

The company's ownership also changed, the organisation grew and with the new city bike projects, our national foothold became stronger. From 2017–2020, Rolan saw rapid growth in our turnover.
The technological revolution and the everyday use of traffic-related IoT (Internet of Things) solutions introduced completely new types of services on the street scene. The global breakthrough of electric scooters created a new mobility segment. Rolan was involved in bringing Finland's first electric scooter service to the streets, first in Helsinki, and later during that summer also in Turku and Tampere, and in operating an autonomous bus pilot in Helsinki.

In 2020, Rolan’s turnover exceeded two million euros for the first time. Existing business operations were developing in the right direction. Rolan also took a big step into the future by launching several development projects aimed at opening new business areas.

2021–2023: GROWTH WITH MOBILITY SERVICES

In 2021–2023, the servitization of mobility will progress rapidly across the board. Autonomy, IoT devices and 5G technology will enable remote operation, for example. Changes in human behaviour and how we move daily will accelerate the change from day to day.

Rolan’s new business areas and strong focus on the production of mobility services will grow the company in years to come. We, at Rolan, have a clear mission: Mobilizing the world.
